  5. DIRECTIONS
  6. The Visitor Center is 2 miles (3.2 km) southwest of Keystone on SD 244 and 25 miles (40 km) south of Rapid City on US 16.

  8. WHEN TO VISIT
  9. Mt. Rushmore is open year-round, although peak season occurs in the high summer months.  Daytime summer temperatures range from 70-90░F, and evenings are cool.  Winter temperatures range from 40░F to -20░F.

  11. POINTS OF INTEREST
  12. Monumental heads of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt were sculpted by Gutzon Borgham on the face of a granite mountain.  The sculpture was authorized for addition to the National Park Service on March 3, 1925.

  15. Visitor Center; summer evening programs; interpretive exhibits; audiovisual programs; wildlife viewing and birdwatching; short hiking trails.

  17. GENERAL INFORMATION
  18. Climbing Mt. Rushmore is prohibited.  Visitors must stay on trails and stairways that provide stunning views of the sculpture.  Visitors who have heart problems or who have trouble breathing should be aware of the high elevation (5,250 feet).  Food and supplies, as well as overnight accommodations, are obtainable nearby in Keystone and Hill City.  Complete dining service is available in the park only during summer months.
